Japan's "wealth level" has dropped to 24th in the world

The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) released the Human Development Report from 2023 to 2024 on the 13th. The report shows that in the world ranking of the "Human Development Index" that reflects the affluence of national life, Japan has regressed from 22nd in the world last time (2021 to 2022) to 24th this time. Switzerland and Norway ranked first and second in the world respectively, the same as last time.

According to Kyodo News Agency's report on the 14th, some Japanese netizens said on social platforms: "Japan is lagging behind in economics, education, politics and other fields. This time's 'Human Development Index' ranking exactly reflects Japan's reality." Others said : "Wage levels have not increased for decades, real wages continue to decline, and the gap between rich and poor continues to widen. However, (Japanese) politicians do whatever they want and only want to line their own pockets. There is no hope for the country's future."

The "Human Development Index" is a comprehensive indicator based on three basic variables: "gross national income per capita, education level and life expectancy" and calculated according to a certain calculation method. After severe declines in 2020 and 2021, the index is expected to rebound sharply in 2023. However, the report shows that although the index in rich countries and regions is in line with expectations, in most poor countries and regions, the index has not yet returned to pre-COVID-19 levels.
