Japan's (JPN) exports rose for the first time in three months in September amid signs of recovery in overseas markets, but the worsening Israeli-Palestinian conflict and a slowdown in China's (CHN) economy are clouding the outlook for Japan's economy.

Data from the Ministry of Finance showed exports rose 4.3 percent year on year in September, beating expectations of 3.1 percent and the previous reading of -0.8 percent in August.

By category, exports were driven by vehicle shipments, which accounted for 18% of overall exports, offsetting a decline in exports of chip-related products. Food exports to China, including aquatic products, fell 58 per cent in September from a year earlier amid a ban on Japanese food imports amid fears of water leaks from the Fukushima nuclear plant.

By destination, exports to China, Japan's biggest trading partner, fell 6.2 per cent in September from a year earlier, falling for the 10th straight month, dragged down by weak demand for chips and electronic components, food and electronic circuits. Exports to the US rose 13 per cent year on year, led by hybrid vehicles, mining and construction machinery and electric motors.

The trade data also showed that imports in the year to September fell 16.3 percent from a year earlier, compared with expectations for a 12.9 percent decline.
